Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

Autumn Term 1

This term we will be learning about mountains for our topic. This learning will culminate in our week's residential trip to the Brecon Beacons mountain range in Wales on 30th October. This is a phenomenal trip for the children because they are able to develop their team-building skills and independence as well as their knowledge of mountains. The children will take part in a variety of activities, such as: caving, canoeing and climbing a mountain which incorporates a waterfall walk. The children always have an amazing time so it is a trip not to be missed!

The children will start their topic by researching a secret mountain range and

creating information texts based on it. They will then share this learning with the class to teach others about their mountain range and the location of it. During the mountains topic, the children will also learn about how mountains are formed and will write explanation texts about this, including using diagrams to illustrate their understanding.

In Science, children will learn about the key life processes and the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. This learning will then link to the mountains topic as children will learn about different types of animals that live in the mountains and how they have adapted to survive there.

In Literacy, the children will be reading 'Way of the Wolf' by Bear Grylls. They will use this book to infer about the main characters, writing diary entries from their point of view and descriptions of mountain scenes. The children will then use their learning to plan and write their own adventure stories based in the mountains.

In Maths, the children will be revising their place value understanding up to 10,000,000.

The will use this understanding to recap the methods for addition and subtracting, starting first with practical resources, before leading to the pictorial and abstract methods. Children will use this learning to solve real-life problems.

Important Days of the Week

This term, we have PE on a Wednesday or Friday afternoon. Whilst the weather is still nice, we will also be swimming on a Monday afternoon (Osprey) and a Tuesday afternoon (Peregrine) so please ensure that kits are in school. We visit the library every day after lunch so we can change our books. Homework will be a project for the half term thinking about the children's time at primary school.
