Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

Autumn 1

Welcome back to a new and exciting year in Year 5!

This term our topic is going to be focused on the book 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo. The children will read the story as a class and throughout the book will have a variety of writing opportunities such as: writing a diary, a newspaper report and eventually building up to writing their own adventure story based on Kensuke's Kingdom. The children will also take part in many exciting role play activities to understand the main characters further. These will include: role on the wall, conscience alley and even making their own shelters on the field to understand how to survive in the wild.

Whilst reading the book, other subjects of the National Curriculum will be covered. During Geography, children will track Michael's journey on the boat following a world map, learning about some of the key cultures as they travel. In Computing, children will plan and create their own animation based on a scene from the book; they will need to think about the characters, the background and how to move the characters slightly to create a fluent stop-motion animation. In Art, children will be learning about water colours and how to use these to create a picture depicting a sea environment.

In Maths, children will be focusing on place value up to 1,000,000 and will use practical equipment to support their understanding. They will then move on to addition and subtraction methods, first of all practising with practical equipment before moving onto the pictorial and then the abstract methods.

Things to remember

Homework goes out weekly and the children will have spellings, Literacy and Maths. It goes out on a Thursday and is due in on a Tuesday. We go to the library on a Thursday afternoon so make sure you have your books in school to change. Our PE is on a Thursday morning so make sure full PE kits are in for this time. We will be continuing swimming this term whilst the weather is still nice and this will take place on a Wednesday morning.
